HOUSTON, TX (March 17, 2009) – Twenty-seven Houston-area Massage Envy clinics were honored with the 2009 Hope Award for Corporate Philanthropy for the company’s support in the fight against breast cancer. The award gala, hosted by Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Houston Affiliate, took place February 28, at the Omni Hotel. The celebration recognized Houston businesses, individuals and organizations whose support helps save lives and end breast cancer.
Houston Massage Envy regional developer Lance O’Pry accepted the award on behalf of the 27 Massage Envy clinic owners who have raised more than $120,000 over the last two years by sponsoring Massage for the Cure, a one-day, 14-hour event where participants receive free one-hour massages in exchange for a donation of any amount to Komen.
O’Pry said hundreds of licensed massage therapists performed thousands of therapeutic massages at 27 Houston-area Massage Envy clinics for both the 2007 and 2008 events – with 100% of the proceeds benefitting the Komen Houston organization.
Marjorie S. Landry, Komen board chairman, praised O’Pry and the Houston Massage Envy franchisees for “creating an incredible, innovative event” that not only raises money, but also raises breast cancer awareness throughout the Houston area.
O’Pry, who is Houston’s Massage Envy regional developer along with his parents, Freddy and Muffy O’Pry, said the Massage for the Cure event was inspired by the fact that Komen and Massage Envy serve the same group of people – women.
“Almost every woman has been affected by breast cancer, whether through her own experience or that of a relative or a friend. That is why we have enjoyed such tremendous support for Massage for the Cure. Everyone wants to help. We are so proud to be working with the Houston Komen affiliate to fight breast cancer,” said O’Pry.
Massage for the Cure was held in ten other U.S. cities last year where Massage Envy clinics are located.
